PCE-TUM 20 Colorimeter

Portable turbidity meter in accordance with ISP 7027 /
Two automatic-switching measurement ranges from 0 … 50 NTU and 50 … 1000 NTU
The turbidity meter is a handy device with a large display that meets all standards for on-site turbidity analysis. The 0 … 1000 NTU measurement range is divided into two automatically switching measurement ranges to increase the turbidity meter’s accuracy. With its well-designed keypad, the turbidity meter is easy to use. LEDs operating at a wavelength of 830 nm in the infrared spectrum are used as the light source and are therefore invisible to the human eye.

Since the measurement is not performed in the visible region, any pigmentation in the sample plays a minor role in the measurement. Thanks to the arrangement of the photodiodes at angles of 180° and 90°, transmitted light measurement is used for higher ranges, while scattered light measurement is used for lower ranges. Using the 0 NTU and 100 NTU reference standards included in the delivery set, the turbidity meter can be calibrated or adjusted at any time. The PCE-TUM 20 turbidity meter complies with all applicable standards in accordance with EN 27027 / ISO 7027.

Units
The PCE-TUM 20 turbidity meter displays measurement results in NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Unit). This unit is defined in ISO standards. NTU is identical to FTU (Formazine Turbidity Unit). In addition, there are two other units used in practice for measuring turbidity: JTU and SiO2. One JTU (Jackson Turbidity Unit) equals 19 NTU, while one silica unit equals 7.5 NTU.

Measurement principle
The turbidimeter is equipped with an infrared LED with a light source of 850 nm. A photodiode, located at an angle of 90° to the measuring beam, absorbs the light reflected from the dissolved particles (scattered light or nephelometric measurement methods for lower measuring ranges). For larger measuring ranges, an additional photodiode is placed on the opposite side (measurement is carried out using the transmitted light method). The meter determines the turbidity in NTU (FTU) from this. Even colored dissolution, e.g. red wine, can be measured with the infrared LED.
