Every time it is turned on, this gas detector automatically records the current hydrogen concentration in the environment and then evaluates only changes in that concentration. The reset button performs the same function during leak detection. If a leak cannot be clearly detected even though all indicator LEDs are already lit, the reset function can be used to set the current hydrogen concentration as the baseline, allowing for better localization of the leak. You can then use the gas detector’s reset function to reset it to low output values in an unloaded environment.
Regardless of the initial concentration level, the gas detector can be set to one of three different sensitivity levels with the push of a button. The selected sensitivity level is indicated by a lit LED. “H” stands for high, “M” for medium, and “L” for low. The hydrogen content in normal outdoor air is 0.5 ppm. A sensitive device can detect concentrations as low as 5 ppm, or 0.0005 percent.
The sensor is mounted at the end of a 40-centimeter-long semi-rigid hose, so that it can be easily guided to the component being tested. To detect leaks, the sensor is slowly moved along the points being inspected, as close as possible to them. If the gas sensor detects a leak, an alarm sounds and additional indicators light up. The higher the recorded hydrogen concentration is compared to the baseline, the more LED lights illuminate.
With four standard batteries, the air quality monitor operates for about twelve hours under normal use. To conserve battery power, the device turns off after ten minutes when the automatic shut-off feature is activated. An indicator light shows when the batteries are low. The built-in sensor has a limited service life. Under normal conditions of use, it can be used to detect leaks for more than a year. You can regularly test its proper functioning with test gas. If the sensor no longer responds reliably, it can simply be replaced with a new one.
The air quality monitor is not suitable for use in potentially explosive areas. Therefore, it must not be used in poorly ventilated areas where higher concentrations of hydrogen or other flammable gases are expected. Above a certain concentration, hydrogen is one of the most dangerous flammable gases because it requires very little ignition energy. The lower explosive limit (LEL) for hydrogen is four percent.
