Fluorescent substances, known as tracers, have long been used to study underground water flows. They are added to water in appropriate doses and give it the characteristic color of the respective tracer. Uranium has also been used for this purpose for nearly a century. Pure uranium powder or highly concentrated aqueous solutions are quite dark red in color. They do not fluoresce. Only at higher dilutions does uranine cause the water to fluoresce yellowish-green to green, depending on the degree of dilution. The effect becomes even more visible under UV light (365 nm).

Uranium has a low tendency to accumulate on rock surfaces and is therefore well-suited for studying underground water flow paths.
The adhesion properties of many non-porous building materials are also not particularly pronounced. Since uranine decomposes within a few days in daylight, it can also be used to detect leaks, e.g., on leaky house walls. However, this property makes it suitable for investigating and marking surface water only to a limited extent, unless this effect is specifically desired.

Classic uranium powder is a marker that has been recognized for many years and is one of the most strongly fluorescent marking dyes.

This UV-fluorescent dye is clearly visible to the naked eye, which is why it is often used to mark bodies of water. When highly diluted, uranium-based powder—which is highly soluble in water—is toxicologically safe and ideally suited for all leak detection and leak testing applications, where the dyed water must penetrate via capillary action, causing moisture to appear with a significant delay after flooding. Even the smallest leaks can be clearly visualized using a UV lamp.
