The technology, tested at a laboratory in Padua, Italy, was developed by HiRef Spa, a company based in Padua, and Jonix, a startup founded by the Archa laboratories in Pisa.
Cold plasma technology, which is based on the phenomenon of ionization, can inactivate up to 99.9% of the coronavirus in a closed environment within half an hour. This is confirmed by a study currently being published, conducted by Andrea Crisanti’s team at the University of Padua.
This physical phenomenon, which occurs at room temperature, utilizes air, transforming it into an ionized gas (cold plasma) composed of various electrically charged particles: electrons, ions, atoms, and molecules, which collide with one another, creating oxidizing agents capable of breaking down volatile organic compounds, such as bacteria and viruses.

Cold plasma technology (non-thermal plasma) is currently the most advanced in the world. It is used for disinfecting air, surfaces, and food products, as well as in medicine and agriculture; NASA uses this technology in the air filters of its spacecraft.
A low-temperature, unbalanced atmospheric gas-dissolution plasma contains charged ions and electrons, neutral atoms, molecules, and ultraviolet radiation. As a result of ion recombination, hydroxide ions (HO2-) or hydroxide plasma are formed. This active component reacts with the bacterial protein of BACTERIA and VIRUSES and destroys it. Structural chemical compounds (toluene, acetaldehyde, formaldehyde), ODORS, and allergens are similarly destroyed.
Jonix MATE and MINIMATE are portable air filtration and purification devices. Biocidal activity and the neutralization of pollutants occur within a maximum of 60 minutes after the device is turned on. Continuous operation prevents the spread of pollutants generated during activities; it also creates a microclimate and a comfortable environment, which helps reduce work-related stress from the perspective of workplace health protection and promotion.
