How Airozon® Ozone Generators Work

1. Generators in the Airozon® series use oxygen from the outside air to produce ozone as a molecular compound.

2. Ambient air is drawn in by the ozone generator and subjected to an electrical discharge process within the device, after which the diatomic oxygen molecule is split into two individual oxygen atoms—free radicals—by the energy applied.

3. An oxygen atom recombines with an oxygen molecule (A) to form ozone.

4. Ozone is a very strong oxidizing agent with a high reaction potential and is therefore an effective reagent for breaking down pollutants in the ambient air. Radicals associated with the ozone molecule are released from the molecular compound (B) and react with substances in the ambient air, even when they are present in very low concentrations. The oxidative decomposition of airborne and stationary pollutants (e.g., on floors, walls, and ceilings) neutralizes odors and disinfects by killing viruses, bacteria, mold, and carcinogenic and allergenic microorganisms.

5. As a result of the oxidation of oxygen atoms by reagents, ozone molecules are converted into oxygen molecules.

6. Due to their metastable bond, unoxidized ozone molecules also break down back into oxygen after a certain amount of time, leaving no harmful residues. Indoors, under typical conditions, the half-life of ozone is usually between 30 and 60 minutes, which means that the concentration of ozone in the indoor air naturally decreases by half every hour.

7. Ozone is one of the most powerful naturally occurring sterilizing agents in the world, and thanks to its bactericidal, virucidal, and sporicidal disinfecting properties, it is an effective means of eliminating microorganisms, such as bacteria, spores, or viruses.

In nature, ozone is formed in the upper layers of the atmosphere by the sun’s ultraviolet radiation and near the Earth’s surface as a result of lightning strikes or waterfalls.
