Air purifiers draw in air, pass it through several filters (including a HEPA filter), and release clean air into the room. The filter consists of a network of randomly arranged fibers, typically layers of cellulose, synthetic fibers, or glass fibers. These fibers are arranged in an accordion-like pattern, which gives them a greater ability to trap particles.     <strong>A HEPA filter easily removes pathogens larger than 0.3 microns.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>HEPA Filter Efficiency<\/h3>\n<p>To choose between one air purifier or another, you need to know what type of HEPA filter each purifier uses. Therefore, you need to start by knowing what percentage of particles different types of HEPA filters are capable of capturing. <\/p>\n<p>At present, it is not possible to achieve 100% filtration, although this technology comes very close, as<strong> a HEPA filter removes 99.9% of the most penetrating particles (MPPS)<\/strong> ranging from 0.12 to 0.25 microns. HEPA filters are capable of doing this for the smallest and most penetrating particle size (MPPS); now imagine how effective they are against particles larger than one micron\u2014which are the particles that viruses tend to be associated with. With a HEPA filter, these are even easier to filter out and contain. Therefore, <strong>the efficiency of a HEPA filter is nearly 100%.<\/strong>     <\/p>\n<p><strong>There is currently no more effective air treatment technology.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The HEPA filter must be certified!<\/p>\n<p>When choosing a HEPA filter, it is important that it be certified. Both the HEPA filter and the air purifier must pass certain tests. In Europe, HEPA filters must remove at least 99.95% of particles from the air. In the United States, on the other hand, at least 99.97% of particles must be filtered out.   <\/p>\n<p>In Europe, HEPA filters are classified according to the UNE-EN 1822-1:2020 standard. <\/p>\n<p>The EN 1822 standard states that there are three main categories of filters, known as: <strong>EPA, HEPA, and ULPA filters<\/strong>, which differ in their particle retention efficiency, ranging from lower efficiency (EPA) to higher efficiency (ULPA). ULPA filters are primarily used in hospitals and laboratories. <strong>HEPA H13 and True HEPA filters are the most widely used filters in homes, schools, and offices today,<\/strong> as they provide effective filtration and are affordable. <\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>EPA &#8220;Efficient Particulate Air,&#8221; with classification levels: E10, E11, and E12.<\/li>\n<li><strong>HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air), which includes two classification levels: H13 with 99.95% efficiency and H14 with 99.995% efficiency. A true HEPA filter (99.97%) falls within the H13 to H14 range. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>ULPA (&#8220;Ultra Low Penetration Air&#8221;), with three levels: U15, U16, and U17.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>All WINIX and Coway air purifiers are <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecarf.org\/en\/\"><strong>ECARF<\/strong><\/a> in accordance with the UN standard EN.1822-1: 2020. It is the type of filter most commonly used in WINIX air purifiers. <\/p>\n<p>In the U.S. <strong>, <\/strong>a filter considered <strong>a True HEPA filter MUST <\/strong>be certified <strong>to remove 99.97%<\/strong> of all microscopic particles as small as 0.3 microns.
